About the Slite quarry permit in Sweden

On 6 July 2021, Cementa received the announcement that the Land and Environment Court of Appeal rejected its application to extend Cementa's permit to extract limestone from existing quarries on Gotland for a further 20 years. The Court does not dismiss the application, but has chosen not to process it and the reason given is that the environmental impact has not been sufficiently assessed.

– It is of utmost importance for Cementa that our operations can continue in a sustainable manner and that we protect natural values and water resources - this is the starting point for everything we do. We do not share the Court's assessment and believe that, on the contrary, the application is based on one of the most far-reaching and comprehensive investigations ever carried out for this type of case. We are confident that we can continue to operate a sustainable cement production in Slite in the future, says Karin Comstedt Webb, Sustainability Manager Cementa and HeidelbergCement Northern Europe.

As the Slite cement plant produces and delivers about 75% percent of the cement volumes used in Sweden, the situation also poses significant challenges for the Swedish construction sector.

On the website of Cementa, you can take part of all the information related to the Slite quarry permit issue (in Swedish).
